What blood pressure medicine should I suggest to my doctor?

February 2nd, 2012 | Posted in blood pressure   Comments Off
eight_kinds_of_hell_454 asked:

I’m taking Abilify and Cymbalta and it has caused my marginal blood pressure to go into stage 1 hypertension. I’m running approximately 150/100 blood pressure sometimes. My best friend gave me some Licinopril to take because he was worried about it and it makes me tired. What other medication can I take to lower my blood pressure that has little side effects?
I know, I’m just looking for some ideas to suggest to my doc. Something that works well but doesn’t cause tiredness.

Potatoes lower blood pressure in people with obesity and hypertension without increasing weight
The first study to check the effects of eating potatoes on blood pressure in humans has concluded that two small helpings of purple potatoes a day decreases blood pressure by about four percent without causing weight gain. The researchers say that decrease, although seemingly small, is sufficient to potentially reduce the risk of several forms of heart disease.

[Supervised exercise training in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension - analyses of the effectiveness and safety].

Praxis (Bern 1994). 2012 Feb 1; 101(3): 163-8
Saxer S, Rhyner M, Treder U, Speich R, van Gestel AJ

Both in today’s scientific research and in clinical practice, there exists a need to address the uncertainty concerning the effectiveness and safety of cardiopulmonary exercise training (CPET) in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It is commonly believed that CPET may be dangerous for patients with PAH, because increasing pressure on the pulmonary arteries may worsen right-sided heart failure. Recently, the first clinical trials on exercise training in patients with pulmonary hypertension reported promising results. Extension of the walking distance at the 6-minute walk test improved quality of life, endurance capacity and a reduction in symptoms were observed after CPET. Furthermore, CPET was well tolerated by the patients in five clinical trials. In conclusion, it may be postulated that CPET is an effective therapy in patients with PAH and was tendentially well tolerated by the patients.

Can a small amount of salt consumed every other day increase blood pressure?

January 19th, 2012 | Posted in blood pressure   Comments Off
asked:

A family member of mine compains about high blood pressure but doesn’t seem to understand the correlation between salt intake and an increase in blood pressure. Almost every day she consumes about a teaspoon of salt but doesn’t see this as a problem. Isn’t a teaspoon of salt enough to increase blood pressure? and for someone like her, who likes salty foods, what is the maximum amount of salt, if any, that can be consumed daily without increasing blood pressure?
Also, I’m wondering - does sugar increase blood pressure?

Resolved Question: Do I have hypertension?

I’m overweight sixteen year old female , last night I was sitting just fine and then I started to feel my heart beating and so I checked my blood pressure , it was 142/79 and my pulse was 107!!!!! I wasn’t even doing anything but setting there. I got really anxious before , and so after i checked it it was a few minutes and my heart stopped doing that. About 20 minutes later after I calmed down my blood pressure was 130/80 and my pulse was 85. So everything was back to normal after I calmed down , I check my blood pressure a lot and it’s usually always normal , I just have those days where It spikes up for no reason. I’ve had an EKG done 6 months ago and it was normal , my doctor thinks I’m fine. But I’m terrified I have heart disease.
